Happily Ever After Stories

TILLIE

" I can't tell you what a delight our little Tillie is!  She hasn't grown too much - weighs still under 3 pounds.  She is so much fun and is a little stinker....but very loving and constantly wants attention.  She steals toys away from her sisters and hogs all the rawhide - but she is always ready to take a nap with one of them or just cuddle by them.  Tillie will jump around Tootsie to try to get her to play, and Tootsie has become more social since we got Tillie.  She is truly a wonderful dog - and we have YOU to thank for bringing her into our lives."

RY

I just wanted to write you and update you on the Shepherd/Collie mix my roommate and I adopted from your sanctuary last March. His name at the Shelter was Bubba or Yogi, (some confusion there) but we renamed him Orion, or Ry for short.
We are so grateful for your sanctuary, and the chance we had to adopt a truly amazing dog. He is so friendly with other dogs, people, and even cats, but he is a good guard dog, and an excellent traveler! Ry and I visited my parents in Montana over Christmas, and he was a perfect angel in the car. Such a change from a little less than a year ago, when he would get car sick and throw up all over my car!
In the year that we have had him, Ry has grown an inch or two, and gone from a skinny 45lbs to one long, lean 60lb muscle! He enjoys hiking, wrestling, trips to the dog park, and (when in Montana) runs through the snow covered mountains and catching snowballs! Without Safe Haven, he probably would have been put down when the shelter in Carrizozo that ya'll saved him from went through grave financial distress.
Thanks Safe Haven for giving animals a second chance to find families. I can't imagine life without my overgrown mutt. :)

CORKY

I just wanted to send you some pictures of Corky.  He is such a character and I am loving him in my life.  One of the pictures is of him and Jack when we went home to California, he was such a good travel buddy in the long drive home.  He always brings a smile to my face and there is never a dull moment when he is around.  Thank you guys for keeping him safe and healthy until I could take him to his forever home.

GORGEOUS

I just wanted to say Thanks- again!  Fifteen years ago I adopted my cat Gorgeous from you all and he is still going strong!! He is my best friend in the world and has been with me through it all – boyfriends, marriage, divorce, moves to two states, and back home to New Mexico.  He has even put up with a “baby sister cat”, Sushi that I brought home from the pound.  He truly is a blessing and I can’t thank you all enough for what you do.

BRENDAN

"Hi! I am compelled to report that Mr. Brendan Sean was a Star at puppy/people class. He was unusually social and wanted to explore the building's interior by himself. Dog smells abound since the facility is a pet grooming business. He also let the instructor work with him, give him treats and scruff his chinny chin chin. I am so proud of my boy!!"

GUS

I just wanted to let you know that Gus, the Yorkie we adopted from you recently, is doing very well. Everyday he goes on walks, and every night he snuggles up on our bed with our other Yorkie (Chanel). Everyone loves him very much and he enjoys getting spoiled by the kids. He fits right into the family and has had no complaints. Thank you for bringing Gus into our lives.

JASPER

Jasper, a sweet  little brown dog adopted from Safe Haven, is pictured cuddling with his new best friend, the family’s Bishon named O’Riley. “Jasper’s very happy, and I would love for other dogs to have the opportunity to be happy like Jasper!” says their owner.

LUCY and RUGER

Lucy’s and Ruger’s owners report the dogs enjoy hiking near Cloudcroft and their new home in Las Cruces. “Both dogs are doing well and fitting in with our family! Tom, the cat, has been training Lucy about the art of cat-dog communication and how to treat him ‘right.’ Both dogs are loved and healthy. Thank you for helping us find our new pups!”

LINCOLN

Lincoln came to Safe Haven as a stray. He started life out with a battle with giardia. After a few courses of treatment, he was finally ready for a forever home. The volunteers and staff would keep their fingers crossed that someone would come to visit and adopt this beautiful dog who was so deserving of a good home. Eventually a couple showed up, and it was love at first lick.  We recently heard from his new family who state that Lincoln is very much enjoying his new home! They write, “He is always happy to see us. He’s been eating, drinking, and his health is great. He has lots of room to run when he wants, but he mostly enjoys the shade and lounges by our back door. He’s great on walks through the neighborhood. Thanks for taking such good care of Lincoln until we could find him and bring him to his forever home! And thank you for all you do to improve the lives of our community’s animals.” This story is what makes all the hard work we do at Safe Haven so rewarding. We wish for similar stories for all our beloved animal family.

ROXIE

“My daughter Aislinn and I adopted our 2-year-old cat, Roxie, from Safe Haven in December 2010. She was comfortable in our home after the first week. We also have a male cat that adjusted to Roxie’s sweet personality very quickly. Roxie is a beautiful tortoiseshell that is playful, cuddly and adorable, but the day we went to see her, she totally ignored us. She is small and declawed, so she was a bit standoffish around the other cats. Jeff, the sanctuary manager, let us talk to her while standing back so we could decide whether to take her home. Safe Haven doesn’t want you to make a wrong decision. Jeff encourages people to make an appointment to come out to the sanctuary and see if a new family member is waiting for you. So I tell my friends who are thinking about adopting a dog or cat that I highly recommend Safe Haven. The animals are all so sweet and have at least a little history the team knows about.” – Dawn Z. BROWNIE

Brownie came to Safe Haven as a young kitten. She lost her sight due to a rare adverse reaction to the tranquilizer used during her spay procedure. Everyone was devastated over this, and thought that Brownie would be with us for a very long time. Not so! Along came one of our wonderful cattery cleaner volunteers and, after caring for Brownie for a time, she felt she could provide a loving home for a special needs kitten. They are now enjoying each other’s company.
